July 7, 2009 LSA North, Stick-n-Rudder Flight Training ~ a factory authorized Flight Design Pilot Center (FD-PC) is currently training Technical Sergeant Eric Miller, United States Air Force, on his initial Sport Pilot certificate. Sgt Miller is home on leave in Northfield MN following a tour of duty in the Middle East. He is an avionics technician working on KC135 refueling aircraft. Following his leave he will be stationed in Grand Forks ND with his wife and son nearby. He has been a member of the USAF for 13 years and plans to continue his career of service to our nation to retirement age. Sgt Miller’s goal is to complete his flight training in just three weeks time. He completed his FAA Sport Pilot Knowledge test and scored a very respectable 95 on his exam following his tour of duty in a war zone and studying in the off hours. He and his instructors (Scott Johnson, Chief Flight Instructor and Tyra Cerny ~ Chief Ground Instructor for LSA N) are using the Paul Hamilton ASA “Learn to Fly” course materials. Using the FD-PC approved course as a guide we are flying twice per day and advancing through the syllabus at 2~3 times the normal rate in this accelerated program. Flight Instructor Scott Johnson has been very impressed with the way Sgt Miller has shown up for each lesson prepared and mentally ready to learn. He has been a quick learner and very steady on the stick, in our 2004 Flight Design CTsw. Confidence is high that he will complete his goal in a timely manner and become a safe and competent pilot. When asked what his aviation goals for the future are, Sgt Miller smiled and said he would like to become a flight instructor, retire to Alaska, teach, and fly float planes. To coincide with that date, his son will then be old enough to be his first student and earn his license. Sgt Miller said he found LSA North and Flight Design via an Internet search this past January, while researching how to accomplish his goal of learning to fly. Together we created a custom, accelerated, training program to accomplish his goal (weather permitting) in just three weeks. He was attracted to the Sport Pilot program because it was quicker to attain than a traditional Private Pilot license, and much cheaper due to the fewer required hours. Since learning to fly the CT he said he has been impressed with the responsiveness and ease of handling of the aircraft, and its many safety features. He especially likes the visibility the big windows provide to the pilots, and the spacious 49 inch wide cockpit, and large available baggage area.
